Organizers of Leadership North Port opted to renovate the teen center at the Gene Matthews Boys & Girls Club as part of is first project, which is themed “Eyes to the Future.”
The project is supposed to spur a tradition of community-minded ventures geared toward “local human service organizations,” the group said in a statement. The organization picked Gene Matthews Boys & Girls Club because of a firm belief in “supporting our youth,” the statement said.
“(North Port) is a young city that invests in its future and we felt our youth deserve to get the extra help and programming that we can provide,” said organization president James Gordon, a lawyer and founder of the Port Charlotte-based firm, Frohlich, Gordon and Beason.
In its project, LNP will focus on updating furniture, fixtures and equipment at the teen center, while adding new flooring, TVs/monitors, a recording booth and select gaming equipment. The group will also commission local artist Deeanna Atkinson to create a custom mural.
“This is a good time to provide up-to-date tools to our teens,” organization Vice President Jill Luke said, a candidate for North Port City Commission. “(It) will make a difference in their lives and to the community.”
Estimated cost of the project is $20,000. To raise funds, LNP will launch a social media campaign, including a crowdfunding effort through GoFundMe. Two fundraisers — “A Night With the Charlotte County Stone Crabs” and a March Madness — themed event — are also scheduled.
Gene Matthews Boys and Girls Club , which offers educational programs to over 230 children, has been recognized in the past for its achievements, including “National Youth of the Year.”
“In a city where we can ‘Achieve Anything’ it’s most important that we can create and distribute ‘environments for success’ so that all our kids have an equal opportunity to reach their potential,” said leadership participant Dave McCarron, a business development and research associate at Capital Care Associates.
With “Eyes on the Future”, members of Leadership North Port reviewed several proposed community projects and have selected the teen center area of the Gene Matthews Boys and Girls Club. The project will include updating the gaming equipment, TVs, furniture, painting the room and adding a mural to brighten the teen room. Leadership North Port will create a “GoFundMe site, in addition to soliciting sponsorships and donations from the community to help raise the estimated $20,000 to complete this project.
